Teaching Your Child To Read With Predictable Books

Children are habitual creatures. The more that is the same, the better they can understand and learn. That is why children learn to read with predictable books.
A predictable book is one that is repetitive in the text or repetitive in the ideas. Brown Bear, Brown Bear by Eric Carle is a great example of a predictable book. The repeating text of "Brown bear, brown bear, what do you see?" is great for emergent readers. They can predict what each page is going to say, learning that text moves from left to right, and remembering what each of the repeating words looks like.
Many people think that a repetitive book only teaches a child to memorize. That is true. Children learn to read by memorizing what words look like, or the pattern the letters make. They also learn to read by sounding words out. By memorizing the text, a child is learning that a /B/ is the beginning of Brown and a /b/ is the beginning of the word bear. The can form a relationship to the letter and the sound and use that knowledge another time when they see the "b." The memorization is an important part of learning to read.
Repetitive ideas or themes are also a good way to help children learn to read. Series books, such as Bear About the Town, Bear at Home, Bear in the Sunshine, and Bear in a Square by Stella Blackstone help children learn to read by repeating the same ideas of the bear through each book. Series' books help children form connections between different books and can help them compare and contrast what is happening to the character. All of these elements are important in learning to read.
Helping your child learn to read by providing repetitive books will give your child the confidence to read. The confidence is from the ability to predict what is coming next, even if at first they are "pretending" to read. The repeating text and ideas will help them form connections between what they see and what they hear. This is a fun way to encourage reading.

Get The Best Deals When It Is Time To Buy Text Books

One the most expensive aspects of college life is the need to buy text books. I used to dread the beginning of each semester because I knew that I have to obtain textbooks to get a passing grade on all my classes.
If a student is unable to find used copies of text books, they can spend as much as $100 or more for every book. There are also other items that professors require the students to buy such as, study guides and workbooks.
Every time a student has to buy text books, it puts a huge dent in his or her budget. A decade ago when I was still in college, there were no alternatives to the campus bookstore.
There were one or three independent bookstores where students could buy textbooks, but these were usually too far and you had to compete with thousands of students. These days, on the other hand, students have a lot more options when it’s time to buy test books.
Most of these alternatives are inexpensive and more convenient then paying for text books on the campus bookstore.
Discount websites are one of the alternatives that students these days can benefit from. These websites are dedicated to supplying college textbooks, and often offer these materials for notably less than campus bookstores prices.
Students who have tried this option to buy text books have claimed to have saved up to 20 to 70 percent. These discount websites will also conveniently deliver your orders to your dormitory or home.
The drawback that comes with the option to buy text books from a website is that you will be unable to inspect the merchandise before you purchase them. The text books that will be delivered may have missing pages, misprints, and tattered covers.
You might also get the wrong title which can be really difficult to exchange for the correct book. Fortunately discount websites are generally accurate in supplying students who ordered text books from them.
If you are having problems with the expensive costs that come with having to buy text books, I recommend that you hop on the Internet and browse through several discount sites.
This can really help you save money and can make your college life more enjoyable.

Text Books Measure Will Give College Students a Break on Text Book Prices

When the US House passes a bill that is intended to give college students a break in the price of their text books, this will be a first for the senate regarding text book price legislation.
Many college universities and state colleges will implement additional measures to make sure that text book legislation is more difficult than the house proposes, but this is the first time that this has been done. Legislation was sponsored last year by a republican senator and this lead to text books being required to go through a central review committee that would give proposals for price increases and quality assurance.
There are many college students that view the price of text books as a huge burden, this causes many students that work part time to have to take on more hours just to pay for essential costs of being a student.
Among other things, the legislation would require:
• University bookstores to sell books without expensive add-on products such as CDs or study guides, whenever possible. Such bundled packages can greatly increase student costs for books.
• Faculty to submit lists of required textbooks to the university bookstore in time to make sure enough books are available for students enrolled in classes.
• Faculty to limit use of new editions of books when changes from a previous edition are minimal, thus making used books available.
The bill is now before the full Senate. Both chambers of the General Assembly have to approve each other's bill. Textbook publishers opposed the legislation. Bundled packages often save students money – that’s what publishers believe, however, this is slightly biases since they are the ones that control the prices.

Expensive College Text Books or Course Packs Instead

Every semester, I am amazed again at how expensive college text books can be. It is not that there are no ways to buy cheap text books. There absolutely are. The problem is that the professors wait for too long, order too few college text books to the stories, or order them to the wrong stores the ones that charge the highest prices. If I had time to buy every college text book online, I would never have to pay an exorbitant fee. I would be able to get a good deal on all of my reading material. As it stands, there are often not enough used text books to go around. Some classes change their reading material too frequently, while other professors are actually designing new classes every the semester. It is not fair to us poor students.
Some professors in my opinion the nice ones get around the problem of expensive college text books by using course packs instead. Course packs are much easier and cheaper alternative to text books. Because you have them printed yourself at copy shops, you can get course packs for a fraction of what college text books cost. There really is no comparison. The only problem is that course packs do not last nearly as long, and often the quality is lower. Because you are making the copies yourself, there can be small errors that slip into a college course pack. Nonetheless, I vastly prefer them to college text books. I do not care that they are more cheaply bound, or that they do not look as pretty. They have all the information that they need, and they are often more up to date than college text books.
If you do have time, you should look at the course materials ahead of time. If you plan it right, you can often get your college text books online by the second week of class. In the meantime, you can keep up on the reading by borrowing the college text books of your classmates. Although this approach can be somewhat inconvenient, it still saves you a lot of money and so is better in the long run. If you are really on the ball, you can find text books used before they run out. Used college text books are often much more affordable than new ones, and they are usually still in pretty good condition. The problem is that they are in such demand. Everyone wants one.

The Influence of Title and Cover of Your Ebook

To me, writing an e-book with out a professionally designed cover is just a waste of time. The power of your e-book cover can not be too stress. The cover of your e-book can be the bridge between the failure and success of sales of your e-book. If you are an e-book author and you don't sell them with professionally designed cover then you are losing a lot of money. The first point of call of a prospective buyer of your e-book is your e-book cover. An e-book with a very rich content can fail to sell merely because of its cover. Potential buyers and readers of e-book do judge it by it cover.

Your e-book cover will fuel the desires of your potential reader. It will make your potential buyer feel assured and guaranteed that he or she has found what they are searching for.

I have seen e-books with very poor content sell like wild fire just because of the cover which is very attractive.

Your e-book cover is the only thing that will catch and keep the eyes of visitor to your website websites. Don't just relax after writing an e-book. Try and back your e-book with a professional well designed cover that will be appeal and tantalizing to your potential buyer.

So if you are an e-book author that don't care about his e-book cover, you better give it a second thought. The cover of your e-book can make much more difference than you ever expected. Keep on checking for the first e-book which I am about to publish on www.vickywebworld.com.

Adult Book Stores

Adult book stores cater to some of the needs of adults, meaning they pamper the basic instincts of sex and - in some cases - sleaze. The reality is that adult books comprise a niche market of great fascination not only to young men and women, but also to adolescents and old persons alike.

Ask an adult book store owner and he will tell you that he sells books on healthy sex for normal persons and not just for “sexual delinquents” or “dirty old men”. Besides books on sex, these adult bookstores also sell gifts, novelties, toys, videos, DVDs, used and new magazines and other sex related material for fun and entertainment. These bookstores also cater to the needs of gays, lesbians and homosexuals, and so on. Most of these adult bookstores remain open 24 hours, while some take two hours’ break for the necessary “clean-ups”. To further whet the appetite of their customers some of these stores also have small “theaters” to preview the books that the customer may intend to buy.

Entry to adult bookstores is often restricted to persons who are at least 19 years old. In some states it is obligatory to show valid ID as proof of age before entering these adult book stores.

While providing legitimate fun and entertainment should not be discouraged, some adult bookstores degenerate into promoting illegal forms of sex, which just scares the healthy fun seekers. These places are sometimes creepy and utterly revolting and tend to become dens of obscenity, prostitution and crime. Unfortunately, it is difficult to draw a line between healthy sexual entertainment and “perverted” sex. Yet, going by the number of people who visit these stores, it can only be concluded that their popularity is on the rise.

Books - The Best Gift to Send to Whom You Love

If you are not sure what type of gift to give to a young adult, try giving a young adult book. Books make wonderful gift ideas. You can purchase young adult books at any major retail bookstore. The Internet is a wonderful resource for saving money if you know where to look, and books are one of the easiest items to save on, since you never have to worry about fit or color or style. There are many sources for cheap books online, and they are especially valuable for purchasing young adult books.

Young adults outgrow reading levels and interests so quickly that it seems a shame to pay full price for books that will most likely be read once and then discarded. By locating cheap books online through new and used booksellers, you can minimize the expense of keeping up with a young adult's changing interests and provide a wide and ever-changing variety of reading material to keep your teen's interests engaged.

Young adult books are generally written for audiences between the ages of 12 and 18, and deal with themes and topics that are especially relevant to teens. They are usually short to medium length chapter books addressing things like coming of age, dating, friendship, and fitting in, and can provide a means of understanding their own experiences as well as entertainment to the teen reader.

Because young adult books are read at specific ages and then outgrown, used young adult books are abundant. Few people keep young adult books once their children have reached adulthood, and the Internet provides an easy forum for buying and selling used books. From free book swapping sites to online retailers, there are many outlets that offer cheap books online, especially if you're looking for young adult books.

Some popular sources for cheap books online are Amazon.com, Half.com and EBay. At all three, you can find used young adult books at a fraction of retail costs. If you prefer new books, don't worry. Discount retailers like Overstock.com and the online outlets of major booksellers like Barnes and Noble offer new books at a discount from list prices. Be sure to consider shipping costs when looking for cheap books online, because sometimes what appears to be the best price is actually more expensive after shipping costs. Major online retailers frequently offer free shipping for larger orders, so be sure to be aware of store policies. Sometimes buying more can cost less!

Book Proposals - My Top 10 Secrets

Joel writes books about baseball. He’s a good writer, and his angle is the psychology of sports. The only problem is that Joel is such a fanatic about getting all the science right that he seldom stops to think about the way to sell his work.

When I coached Joel, I told him my first secret: Be commercial. This doesn’t mean you need to forget the science or be crass. But it does mean you need to look at the marketplace.

And speaking of marketplace, that’s the second secret. You want your book proposal to list the markets, that is, the people who will buy the book. Third secret: Don’t just do this in one or two sentences. Devote at least a paragraph, and better yet, a whole page to it.

SECRETS OF THE PROS

The fourth secret pros use to get their book proposals accepted is to include a promotion section that has some oomph to it. By this I mean you state exactly what you will do to help sell the book: speak at conferences, go on radio and TV, mention the book on your popular Web site, and so on.

Professionals have a fifth secret, and that is they always use a strong book hook. This is a one-sentence summary of the book that might appear on the back cover. Take the time to make this book hook sing. How? By reading the book hooks of your favorite books! You’ve got those books on your shelves already, don’t you? Take a look how those books were encapsulated into one sentence. Then try your hand at the same thing. It’s not that difficult, although it can often take hours, or days, of work to get it right.

The sixth, seventh, and eighth secrets are related to the overview section of the book proposal: It needs to start with a very intriguing opening paragraph, then it needs to describe the book briefly (usually in one paragraph), then it needs to tell the expected completion date and length of the book.

FINAL BOOK PROPOSAL SECRETS

The ninth secret is to include a great author bio. I’m not talking about a simple list of publications or a resume. I’m talking about one or more paragraphs describing you and your writing credentials. For examples of how to do this, look at the author bios on the backs of your favorite books. You can even copy some of the same phrases they use, where appropriate.

The final secret is perfection: You’ve got to make your proposal perfect. Read it carefully to make sure there are no typos.

Use my top ten tips and you’ll craft a winning book proposal that will likely land you a good literary agent to represent your work.

Book Reivew -The Silver Spoon by Phaidon Press

Looking for an Italian cooking bible? Look no further. This is one of my favorite types of cookbooks by far. It has over 1000 recipes. It has recipes that range in many different areas of Italian cooking. Photos are high quality and the publisher did an excellent job in producing this book.

Books like these have a depth in material. There are so many different recipes for so many different ingredients you will find plenty of recipes that you will be pleased to serve. One of the selling points of this book to me is how it is broken down by courses of food, and by type of ingredient. I have never seen any other Italian cookbook produce so many different recipes for so many different types of fish, vegetables, meats, and so much more.

This book definately reminds me of The Joy of Cooking Cookbook. Both books serve as a resource of great recipes, but both have lots of information to help grow your cooking skills and abilities. I don't think you can ask for much more out of a cookbook, making delicious food, and enhancing your skills.

I highly recommend this book. If you are looking for a book to help broaden your Italian cooking, this is a great book to start with. I do not think you can beat this book for the depth in both southern, and northern Italian cooking. So many different Italian cookbooks miss one of the regions. Great photos, many tasty recipes, and packed with all sorts of knowledge to help grow your cooking skills, you can't go wrong with this book.

Educational Bookstores

A large number of educational bookstores have come up over the last few decades. The growth of educational stores is closely linked with the growth of educational publishing, and a growing consciousness among children as well as grown-ups about the importance of educational books.

Educational bookstores have also become popular, as they are now prepared and packaged in such a way to attract the attention of children. Small educational bookstores often sell books for school or for college. They offer a limited number of books. As the profit margins are not very high in the educational books segment of the publishing industry, small educational bookstores are not able to make a substantial amount of money.

However, with a number of top publishing and retail chains opening educational bookstores, the smaller players have been marginalized in this market. Now the big names and top brands rule the roost. By sheer volume of sales, they are able to make sufficient profits.

Many educational bookstores are exclusively meant for school or for higher education. Some of them sell only medical or engineering books, while others only deal in art and literature-related books.

Many educational bookstores have a special segment of used books. It generally contains those expensive books that a lower-income family may not be able to afford new, but can buy at a much lower price.

Most of the educational bookstores offer heavy discounts during 'clearance sales.' You can get some good books at a nominal cost on such occasions. Many book lovers often wait for such an opportunity to make bulk purchases. There are several online educational bookstores also. Some offer books at lower prices.

Basketball Books

f you like to read, and want to learn about the game of basketball, you may want to look into buying a book or two on this subject. Every year several top of the line titles are published on the game of basketball. Some of the books are about the game itself, and some of them are about how basketball relates to life. But either way, if you are a basketball fan and like to read you should be in heaven with these books.

For people that are trying to learn about the game of basketball, the best books are the ones that are instructional. These books can help you to learn new strategy if you are a coach, or improve your skills if you are a player.

Also, keep in mind that the basketball books that are published were written by people who know what they are talking about. The majority of instructional books are written by top quality coaches, or people that are in the know. This ensures that the information you are reading is the best of the best.

You can find basketball books for sale both online and in bookstores. No matter where you decide to search, make sure that you keep an open mind. There are enough books available on this subject to keep you busy for a very long time. You should research each one, and then make a decision on which one will best suit your needs. This way you will end up with the knowledge that you have been seeking.

What Sells on eBay? Children's Series Books Like Animorphs

Children's Series books like Animorphs are another thing to keep an eye out for while you are at Garage sales looking for items to sell on eBay. There are two reasons why these are great:

1. You can find them at most Garage sales in the Suburbs

2. You can buy them for cheap and resell them for a good profit.

When I say you can buy them for cheap, I am talking five to ten cents per book. When you find them at a garage sale, offer to buy them all for a nickel a piece. After that, you can always go a little higher depending on the series.

Here is a list of several good children's book series to look out for:

* Animorphs by K.A. Applegate, Published by Scholastic. Series includes 54 books with 10 Companion books. Books resell for about $1 per book, if series is complete, up to $2.50 per book.

* Box Car Children by Gertrude Chandler Warner, Series includes 113 books. Re-Published by Scholastic. Newer books resell for $1 per book, Original series for much more.

* Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey, Published by Scholastic. Series includes 9 books and counting. Books sell for at least $2 a book, more if newer books are included.

* Goosebumps by R.L. Stine, Original Series includes 62 books, Goosebumps series 2000 includes 24 books. Published by Scholastic. Resell for about $1 per book.

* Junie B. Jones by Barbara Park. Series includes 27 books. These resell for about $2 per book.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of books to sell on eBay. This is only a primer. You should do some research yourself, and make sure these are actually viable options, make a list of how much you would be willing to sell per book, etc...

Unlike selling other things on eBay, it is best not to split these up into smaller lots. But to try to sell them all together. The more complete the set, the higher your price will be. If you have an almost complete set, it might be worth it to buy the missing book on Amazon.

Happy hunting.

panish Audio Books

Spanish is one of the most spoken languages in the world. If you look for keyword searches in any search engine for any product, there will be searches related to that product, asking for information in Spanish, or for example in the case of books or audio books, a Spanish version of it.

As it was said, audio books are not the exception. There are hundreds of people looking for "Spanish audio books" or "audio book in Spanish" in most of the search engines and directories.

Fortunately, there are some audio book stores that are starting to have spanish audio books as one of their categories. There are some classic titles such as Papa Rico, Papa Pobre o La Ola Latina that can be found on almost all audio book stores.

In addition, there are other important categories in which people looking for spanish audio books can be interested. These are language learning audio books, as an audio book is an excellent tool to learn a foreign language, because you can also learn the correct pronunciation of words.

The most common Spanish audio books in these categories at this moment are English courses for Spanish speakers, but without any doubt in the near future, a spanish speaker will be able to learn any language.

So people looking for a Spanish audio book should visit the different audio book stores where they will find a good number of titles to choose from, and that number will grow in the next months and years.
